SARAS stands for Sheffield Area Refuge and Support. They offer a safe space for single women (16+) with or without children, to live after leaving abusive relationships. Dependent children must be aged 18 or younger. The service is run by Women’s Aid.
The service is responsive to women and children from a variety of cultural backgrounds and with a variety of needs and circumstances. Their support is provided regardless of age, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, language, culture or faith. They support women fleeing domestic abuse in all forms, including, physical, sexual and psychological abuse, ‘honour based violence’, female genital mutilation and forced marriage.
Currently, Women’s Aid offer two sites in Sheffield. Both refuges keep their addresses confidential and have a range of security measures in place to help to keep you safe, such as CCTV and door entry systems. You do not have to share a bedroom with another family and you do not have to leave your room or the refuge during the day.
All referrals must be made through the Housing Support Pathway. If you need help between 5pm – 8:30am, you can call Women’s Aid directly on 0114 236 6423 / 0114 236 2518 (Refuge 1) or 0114 244 6573 (Refuge 2).
The Sanctuary Scheme is a service for people who cannot leave their homes but fear an attack from an ex-partner or family member. They can provide home security including window and door locks, personal alarms, fire-proof letter boxes and in extreme cases, safe rooms within the property.
You should contact the Domestic Abuse Helpline on 0808 808 2241 and ask about the Sanctuary Scheme, to see if you are eligible.
If you are between 16-25 please contact the Young Women’s Housing Project on 0114 267 0580.
