SAVTE stands for Sheffield Association for the Voluntary Teaching of English. They provide English language support to people in Sheffield who cannot attend an English class. Their volunteers help learners in their communities or in their homes, through one-to-one sessions or conversation groups.
Conversations groups are a great way for learners to practice their speaking and listening skills in an informal and friendly environment. There are approximately 25 conversation groups that meet regularly across Sheffield, including online options.
SAVTE welcome referrals from any organisation working with people who live in Sheffield. They work with all women, men, people who have been in the UK a long time as well as new arrivals including, refugees, asylum seekers and victims of modern-day slavery, regardless of their immigration status. Information on making a referral is on their website.
SAVTE also produced a list of mental health resources. These help teach the vocabulary that might be needed to describe symptoms and experiences, including resources on:
- Agoraphobia
- Bereavement
- PTSD
- Self harm
- Anxiety
- Depression
All the resources are free to download as a PDF and include advice on where to get additional support and help.
